ESMA prioritises transparency in new sustainability roadmap
The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) recently published its Sustainable Finance Roadmap for 2022-2024. It sets out three priorities: tackling greenwashing and promoting transparency; building National Competent Authorities’ and ESMA’s capacities in the sustainable finance field; and monitoring, assessing and analysing ESG (environmental, social, and governance) markets and risks.
High-quality data and the capacity for meaningful comparison and analysis are evidently critical in the first and last of those priority areas. The roadmap affirms ESMA’s commitment to the ongoing development of clear and comprehensive sustainability disclosure rules, as well as tackling data gaps and integration with financial reporting data via the incipient European Single Access Point (ESAP). Our take? Key to this is digital-first thinking as the regulator fosters sustainability reporting.
