IFAC investigates education for accountants in sustainability reporting

Posted on January 19, 2024 by Editor

In response to the increasing demand for sustainability-related disclosure and reporting, the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) has published a literature review to assess and enhance the education available to accountancy professionals.

Stakeholder expectations have shifted, prompting the accountancy profession to adapt and expand its capabilities in sustainable reporting, disclosure, and assurance. IFAC’s literature review focuses on essential themes within sustainability education, offering valuable insights into the competencies required of professional accountants. By identifying these key competencies, the review addresses the changing landscape and the critical skills needed for effective sustainability reporting.

The literature review also emphasises educational strategies for developing these competencies, offering practical guidance on cultivating a workforce capable of meeting the demands of sustainability reporting. Additionally, the challenges faced by the accountancy education community are outlined, providing insights into the importance and the challenges involved in integrating sustainability reporting education into accounting curricula.

To reflect the changing landscape of accountancy, education on sustainability reporting related matters has also now been included in the upcoming revisions to International Education Standards for accountants.
