SEC opens beta testing for major EDGAR improvements

Posted on October 7, 2024 by Editor

Last week the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released a series of amendments designed to improve EDGAR, its Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system. The changes, collectively called EDGAR Next, aim to improve the experience for filers accessing the platform.

The EDGAR Next initiative includes enhanced security protocols, updated account management tools, and a modernised Form ID for easier access. EDGAR Next also introduces new APIs enabling automated interactions with the system, reducing manual input, and increasing efficiency in submitting, retrieving, and managing filings.

Filers can now test these features in the beta environment to prepare for enrolment in March 2025 and the upcoming deadline for compliance in September 2025.

EDGAR has long been the backbone of the SEC’s electronic filings, and these updates appear to be a useful step towards improving the system’s usability and security. The phased roll-out should provide time for preparatory testing, offering filers a number of resources to navigate the transition. Given rising demand for enhanced security measures and more efficient submission processes, EDGAR Next is a welcome next step for the SECs filing process – we encourage our US filing readers to road-test the new features in this beta release.

To help with the transition, the SEC is holding live webinars and Q&A sessions for development teams throughout October. You can also take a look at the EDGAR Next statements here.
