SEC steps up cyber enforcement with new tech unit

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU), a 30-person team dedicated to tackling cyber fraud and protecting investors from misuse of emerging technologies.
Laura D’Allaird will lead the new unit, which replaces the Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit and sits alongside the SEC’s recently formed Crypto Task Force, led by Commissioner Hester Peirce (see above).
Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda framed the move as a balancing act: cracking down on bad actors while ensuring regulation doesn’t smother innovation. CETU’s priorities include fraud involving artificial intelligence, crypto assets, and social media scams, as well as cybersecurity compliance for regulated firms.
While the SEC has indicated a willingness to refine its stance on digital finance, enforcement remains a priority, particularly in areas where new technologies intersect with investor protection.
